We listened to continued demands to untax groceries in Alabama and realized an important victory this year. Together\, we supported the passage of legislation that will reduce the state sales tax on groceries from 4% to 2% as soon as September 2024. \nAlabama Arise depends on what we hear to help guide our work toward our vision of a better Alabama for all. Our online Town Hall Tuesdays will return again this year. These events are a chance for participants to hear issue updates and to share their vision for our 2024 priorities. \nPlease join us this summer to help identify emerging issues and inform our actions. SUMMARY:Alabama Arise advocacy training with Doctors for America
DESCRIPTION:Arise’s Debbie Smith will be part of an advocacy training presented by Alabama Arise and Doctors for America on May 13. There are options to attend either virtually or in person in Birmingham. (Location information is coming soon.) \nOne in five Americans are covered by Medicaid. The Affordable Care Act expanded the Medicaid program to cover almost all adults with income levels up to 138% of the federal poverty level. But millions of Americans live in states that have not yet expanded Medicaid. As of April 2023\, 40 states and the District of Columbia have adopted Medicaid expansion. Ten states have not expanded Medicaid\, including Alabama. \nDoctors for America believe physicians are the best advocates for putting patients over politics. With the right tools\, physicians can be public health leaders in implementing change in their communities. \nJoin Doctors for America and Alabama Arise for an advocacy training in Birmingham on Saturday\, May 13\, from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. \nPlease note this training is open to public health advocates in Alabama only. Legislative Day is an annual opportunity for Arise supporters to meet their lawmakers and make the case for policy changes to improve life for everyday Alabamians. We expect this year’s advocacy to focus on expanding Medicaid\, untaxing groceries and funding public transit. \nArise Legislative Day\nTuesday\, April 11\n9:30 a.m. – 3 p.m.\nRSA Plaza\, 6th floor / Alabama State House \nRegistration will begin at 9:30 a.m. at the RSA Plaza Building. The event will begin at 10 a.m. with an issue briefing and lunch at the RSA Plaza (6th floor)\, followed by a news conference at 12:15 p.m. on the steps of the Alabama State House. After the news conference\, we will have legislative visits with our lawmakers before returning to the RSA Plaza at 2:30 p.m. for a membership meeting. \n \nThere is no cost\, but a $15 donation for lunch is suggested. \nPlease note: Health and safety precautions will be observed. If you are not currently a member\, we invite you to join us with a contribution of at least $15!\nIndividual members who contribute between July 1\, 2021\, and Aug. 25\, 2022\, will be eligible to vote on our issue priorities. \nWe will be using the online cumulative voting system ElectionBuddy to cast votes. Voting will open after the annual meeting and continue until 11:59 p.m. CDT on Wednesday\, Sept. 28\, 2022. \nMember groups in good standing may bring up to 6 representatives to cast 7 votes each.
